North Kohala was once a thriving sugar cane community and is an area of the Big Island that is among the least explored by visitors. A drive north on Highway 270 from the Big Island's western port town of Kawaihae takes you past Lapakahi State Historical Park, the birth site of Kamehameha I and Mo'okini Heiau, through the quiet towns of Hawi and Kapa'au to the beautiful Pololu Valley Overlook.

Drive one hour north of the Keahole (Kona) Airport , to the town of Hawi. At Stop sign, go straight on Hwy 270 to the town of Kapaau. The Kohala Club Hotel is located on your left just before you enter the town of Kapaau, right before mile marker 23.
