This beach is located off a sheltered cove between the King Kamehameha Hotel and the Pier. The beach is open to the public and parking is available both behind the hotel (pay) and at the public lot a block South on Kuakini (free). The calm water here has lots of sand and is popular for people with young children and toddlers. There is some decent snorkeling if you swim out a few yards as well, however beyond that is more experienced territory because of the open bay and boat traffic from the pier.

There is a local canoe club here where many paddling teams keep their canoes. You can often watch weekly practices and races, mostly in the mornings and afternoons. You can rent kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, snorkeling equipment, and more at the Kona Boys shack.

The historic heiau on the rocks was the residence of King Kamehameha the First, who ruled the islands from this location for a number of years before the capital was moved to Honolulu.
