Kainaliu is a well preserved example of an island style "old time main street," and still functions much as it did years ago. Many buildings survive from the 20's through the 50's, some with their original tenants. You will find an independent grocery and drug store, a surf shop, coffee roasters and outlets, restaurants, art galleries, boutique stores, and an old theatre where plays are performed and movies are still occasionally shown - all within an easy walk of several blocks. There are several public parking lots, making this an easy place to stop and stroll around on your way South, or as an afternoon or morning activity in and of itself.
Oshimas has been around since the 1920's. The drugstore still maintains an active pharmacy, grocery including produce and fish, and housewares section. It's like stepping back in time to see a functioning drugstore. Next door is the more recently opened Oshima Surf Shop, which has some of the best deals in town on surf gear.
