Kahalu'u is probably the best snorkel beach in the state of Hawai'i. Located close to downtown Kailua Kona and the bedroom community of Keauhou, it is easy to access with a large parking lot and good facilities. The water is generally calm and the snorkeling is second to none. You will see dozens of varieties of tropical fish, and often spot sea turtles also. Though other spots may be less busy, you can't beat Kahalu'u Beach for ease of access and all-around quality.

There is lots of moss-like seaweed on the rocks by the tidepool; careful, it is slippery!

* Many Sea Turtles frequent the waters here; please do not touch.

* Beach has lifeguards on limited duty hours, but still exercise caution. The area to the North / left (towards the church) has an undertow current. Generally, the area to the South / right (shielded by the breakwater) is calmer. Consult with the lifeguards for more info.

* Tidepools on the hotel / South side of the beach are fun to explore. Be careful as the wet rocks and seaweed cover can be slippery.

* Kahalu'u has had some environmental problems due to the large number of visitors here each year. Visitors are advised not to feed the fish, touch marine life, and also to stay off the coral. Touching or standing on coral breaks down its protective film and inhibits growth. Please kokua - help keep the coral healthy!

* Popular beach for longboard surfing, stand up paddle (SUP), and beginner surf lessons.

* Beach has two sets of restrooms, showers, picnic tables, pavilions (which may be reserved by small groups), ample shade, and drinking water. Parking is in the large lot next to the beach. The beach gets busy, so come early.
