Horseback Riding
***Horseback Riding Tours on the Big Island of Hawaii***

<>
Including Waipio Valley Horseback and Waimea Paniolo Horseback

Many areas of the Big Island are accessible only by hiking or horseback. The island has a long history of ranching and horsemanship going back to the 1800's, and there are still many Hawaiian cowboys, or Paniolos, whose families have been ranchers for generations. Today, the ranch tradition is still carried on, but tourism plays a large part in helping keep these traditions alive. Kohala, Kamuela, and Waipi'o valley are all popular hotspots to mount a horse and ride.

Paniolo Adventures

Riders will have a blast on the Paniolo Open Range Horseback Ride. This 2.5 hour adventure will take you "away from it all" as you experience first hand one of the Big Island's most popular and cherished traditions, horseback riding.

The Paniolo Horseback Ride is suitable for beginner, intermediate and expert riders who can walk, trot and canter depending on their experience level.

The Big Island, and especially North Kohala, is the home of the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). In 1793 Captain George Vancouver brought the first long horned cattle to the Big Island. The cattle were presented to King Kamehameha I, who placed a kapu (taboo) on their slaughter so they could multiply. The result was that hundreds of wild cattle roamed the mountain slopes creating such a nuisance that the kapu was lifted.

F.Y.I.

A Rich Tradition in Hawai`i

Hawaii’s Big Island has an unexpected heritage, a rich “cowboy culture” more than a century old, centered in the upcountry ranchlands, populated with colorful characters and endless stories. But what makes a cowboy culture? Cowboys, horses and, well, cows.

The cows arrived on the island before horses or cowboys did, in 1793 when Captain George Vancouver, presented King Kamehameha I with 5 black longhorn cattle. The animals were in poor condition after the long sea voyage, and Kamehameha immediately put them under kapu (taboo, “hands off”), and freed them to range the island.
