Coconut Island

In Hilo next to Liliuokalani Gardens (above), Coconut Island offers a great area to picnic or play in the grass as well as panoramic views of Hilo and Hilo Bay.

Wailoa River State Park & Recreation Area
(And Waiakea Pond)

Wailoa River State Park & Recreation Area is a large park in the middle of Hilo. It surrounds the large Waiakea Pond, and is a great place for a walk or a picnic.

Below - assorted views of the five beach parks that run South-west from Downtown Hilo.
Kalanianaole Ave. runs south from the Hwy 11 and Hwy 19 junction.

Reeds Bay Beach Park, Carlsmith Beach Park,
Onekahakaha Park, James Kealoha Beach Park and Leleiwi Beach Park are all located along this short oceanside road.


These beach parks are fairly uncrowded when school is in session .

Many of these beach areas have tidal pools for Keiki (children) to explore.
